Sarojini Sundaresan
Sarojini Sundaresan is the only female disciple of Alathur Venkatesa Iyer keeping the Alathur
tradition alive.  She is the direct disciple of the doyen Alathur Venkatesa Iyer, the father and Guru
of the notable Alathur Brothers.  The artist had the good fortune of acquiring her complete training
under the great teacher from the tender age of 7. Her training period extended for over one and
half decades in the traditional Teacher-Disciple (Guru-Kula) style. Sensing her innate aptitude for
music, the Guru took special interest in imparting complete training in all the aspects of
performing concerts and also teaching. He put her to the arduous task of mastering the various
patterns of of talas and ragas in order to expertise in rendering intricate
Pallavis, typical of the
Alathur style.  Sarojini Sundaresan is one of the few exponents, who is well versed in expounding
difficult nadai Pallavis with ease.

Sarojini Sundaresan is a renowned Carnatic music vocalist acclaimed by critics and music
lovers as an exponent par excellence.  She started as a performer in her early teens and has
sung in numerous concert platforms in India, the UK, Europe and the USA.  Apart, other than
lecture-demonstrations, she has also conducted workshops for students and music lovers of
various nationalities.

As a Teacher
Apart from being a well-known performer, she teaches students from all over the world training
them in the Alathur style.  Even during the days of training under her guru, the artist was given the
schedule of deputizing the master in imparting training to even some senior disciples. That put
her in good stead to train students who perform in international arenas. The artist has several
disciples who are not only able performers but have also started up their own teaching
institutions. Her students are from different nationalities including the UK, USA, France,
Germany, Malaysia and Singapore, some of them on scholarship grants from their countries and
the ICCR. She has been acclaimed by critics and popular artists in the field as a gifted teacher.

As a Composer
Sarojini Sundaresan has composed several Varnams, Thillanas, Chittaswaras for krithis,
Swarajathis and Jathiswaras. These have been accepted and performed by artists of repute in
the field of music and dance. With her natural ability she has composed tunes for the works of
many composers in different languages of India. She has also the ability to conduct orchestra
music.

She lives in the UK with her husband who is a Chartered Accountant and travels all over the UK,
Europe and the US spreading the art in the form of concerts, lecture-demonstrations and
workshops.
